Injured and fighting battle fatigue, Captain Joshua Spencer returns home from the Civil War to a small Northwestern town in Pennsylvania, expecting to resume the passionate and loving relationship he shared with his wife Helen four years earlier. During her husband’s absence, Helen created a new life for herself and their two young children, a life that she is proud of and reluctant to abandon.
