Description
It’s June 1963 in the rural mountains of Western North Carolina, and fifteen-year-old Caleb Austin is camping alone in the woods. Caleb wakes to find a circle of stones arranged around him and an old leather pouch resting on his sleeping bag. Is he being tricked by one of his friends, or is it the Indian ghost woman, an old Cherokee woman who lurks deep in the forest collecting wild herbs? Caleb enlists his best friend, Marlee (Mary Lee), to help solve this mystery. Caleb’s feelings for Marlee grow beyond friendship, but working on the case strains his relationship with his grandfather and crosses racial lines when the search takes them to the “creek people,” a poor creek community.
